Missed ... those that are now gone
Aliza Recently left to get away from cancer and be with Muffin, Loda , Black Gayle and the Pigeons.
Muffin
Muffin was Kayshas baby and Alizas best friend. He was a wonderful, wonderful cat.
He was one of those cats who'd come and give you a meow and big hug as a greeting when you came home. Not because he was hungry, but because he was glad to see you. He slept in Kayshas bed every night. He'd have a vocal conversation with you. He loved having cuddles and his tummy rubbed. He was too good to stay.
At just over 2 yrs old he developed 'urine crystals'. We took him to the vets immediately, they kept him for a few days on a drip etc. When we went to pick him up from the vets, they carried him out in a cat carry cage. We said "Mufffiiinnn", and he began meowing ... a thanks for saving me type of meow.
We opened the cat cage there in the vets front room and took him out and he hugged us (with his paws around the neck). We were so happy to have him alive and coming home again.
One afternoon, two weeks later, we came home to find him motionless on the floor in the laundry. He was alive but dying ... he was gone 10 minutes later. We got to comfort him as he left, and gave him a cuddle once he'd gone. He was a special little boy.
Gayle
Gayle came to us as a 4yr old ex show cat. She had been living with numerous other cats in conditions the RSPCA considered worth inspecting and taking action on. Gayle came to live with us and settled in very well. She got used to living with our other cats, the dogs and children easily and was never a problem in any way.
Well, just once she caused a 'disturbance'. One which could have been prevented had the vets warned us about it!
After going missing for 2 days and returning all woozy and weak, we took Aliza straight to the vets. She spent 3 days there. When we bought her home, Gayle attacked her. And Gayle meant business. We had to fend her of from poor Aliza with a broom. After keeping them seperate for a couple of days all was back to normal. Though Gayle was 'top-dog' after that.
I put the attack down to Aliza having a different scent, (from the vets), thus- according to Gayle, she was an intruder in our home. I hadn't ever witnessed this type of reaction before. When Muffin had returned from vets, no-one picked on him. Nor has it happened again with todays cats. I thought perhaps it was a heirachal type thing also. But just recently a friend told me of her dog and cat. They already had a cat when they introduced an 8week old puppy to the family. The pair bonded very, very well. Playing together and sleeping together , the dog even defending the cat from other cats. They were close friends. But, 2yrs later , the cat had to go to the vets. On its return, the dog hunted the cat and killed it. The owner was not forewarned of the possible reactions of other pets when bringing someone home from a visit to the vets.
Anyways, besides that episode, Gayle was a good girl. Unfortunately, we had a 'dog negligent' person living next door. They would let their dog out to roam occasionally. One sunny day Gayle was out the front, enjoying a doze on our lawn. That same day, the dog next door came roaming and attacked poor Gayle. She is now gone.
Black Cat

Black Cat was also taken by the dog next door. Though, it was his fault as he was in the dogs yard. (
and our fault for not keeping him secure)
Mick, our dog, was running and barking the length of our side fence. I went outside to see what the commotion was and looked over the fence into neighbours yard to see the neighbours dog with Black Cat in his mouth, shaking him. I yelled at the dog and he dropped Black Cat, but the cat wasn't moving. I ran next door. He was dead. I picked him up and showed the dogs owner. I also told her what had happened to Gayle. The lady moved house the following week, leaving the poor dog behind to be picked up by the pound. It was a lovely dog really and I never blamed the dog at all. The owners were irresponsible, Gayles death was preventable. And Black Cat, well- I guess he just wasn't born with 9 lives. He is pictured here with his good buddy Mick.
Cats should be kept secured ... either in a house or a cat run,
to prevent native birds and small animals being killed by cats.
As in the case of Black Cat, Gayle and the dead cats we often see on the side
of the road, squished by cars, locking them up is for their own protection also.
